UNIMAID SUG Reopens Male Hostel Common Rooms.

The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Maiduguri, led by Comrade Aliyu Idriss Dakasku (DK), has reopened the long-closed common rooms in male hostels, restoring a key space for student relaxation and social interaction.
The facility, which had been unused for years, now provides students with an on-campus environment to unwind and watch football matches collectively.
The SUG President said the initiative is aimed at balancing academics with recreation and improving student welfare.
“We are not just here to study; we also deserve time to refresh our minds.”
He added that the reopening will help reduce overcrowding in viewing centers and discourage students from going outside campus at night, thereby improving security.

The move comes at a time when major competitions like the UEFA Champions League are ongoing and the World Cup is approaching, making the common rooms a timely addition for football-loving students.

Management of the facilities has been assigned to hostel representatives, who are responsible for opening the rooms and ensuring proper use. Activities in the common rooms are expected to reflect the interest of the majority.

The reopening is currently a pilot phase focused on male hostels, with plans underway to extend similar facilities to female hostels.

Students have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive step toward improving campus life and providing a safer, more convenient alternative for relaxation.
