UNIMAID SUG Fitness Day Ignites Campus Spirit, Promotes Health and Unity

.
The University of Maiduguri Students’ Union Government (SUG) successfully hosted a Fitness Day aimed at fostering wellness and unity across the campus community.
The event featured a rally from the SUG Presidential Villa to the NUGA Games Centre, followed by drills and competitive physical challenges.
While the energy among participants was high, the union noted that external factors influenced the overall level of the event. The SUG Treasurer Mary Kayode Lawal provided a candid assessment of the day’s logistical hurdles, citing a lower-than-expected turnout due to academic pressures and morning weather. "The turnout is low because of the exam [students] have by 2:00," Lawal explained.
Despite these obstacles, the leadership remained focused on the broader mission of student health. SUG President Aliyu Idris Dakasko emphasized the importance of physical activity during high-stress periods. "Our fitness is of paramount importance because a healthy body means a healthy brain and good results," Dakasko stated.
A fitness enthusiast himself, the president shared his vision of instilling wellness values across the student body. "If we can instill these kinds of values in our students, it will be very important in keeping them healthy in the university," he remarked.

The Fitness Day also served as a launchpad for broader infrastructure goals. Dakasko revealed ongoing plans to revitalize the university's fitness facilities. "We are planning on how to revive all these gymnastic places that we have in the university. This program serves as an avenue to let individuals know these places exist," he explained.

The impact of the event was clearly felt by the students in attendance. Worship, a 300-level biotechnology student, described the day as a much-needed break from the trials of university life. "It gets us a bit distracted, and we let go of school stress and kind of have time to bond with friends," she remarked.
The event concluded with a call for increased student participation in future wellness programs and a promise from the SUG executive to continue improving campus recreational facilities.

Ultimately, the SUG Fitness Day served as a powerful reminder that the university, by successfully integrating physical wellness, the Dakasko administration, demonstrated a commitment to the "holistic well-being" of the student body. While logistical hurdles like technical sound issues and a low turnout due to examination schedules were present, the positive feedback from participants like Worship highlights a deep-seated desire for more "vibrant" campus engagement.

As the SUG moves forward with plans to "revive" campus gym facilities, this event stands as a blueprint for how collective activity can ignite the campus spirit and provide a much-needed "stress relief" during the academic year.
