🇳🇬Nigerian Cinema Records Massive Growth as Ticket Sales and Audience Increase
Nigeria’s cinema industry, popularly known as Nollywood’s theatrical sector, is experiencing a significant growth phase, marked by rising ticket sales, increased audience turnout, and record-breaking box office revenues.
Recent industry data highlights a strong recovery from post-pandemic challenges and a transition into massive expansion in 2026.
The Nigerian box office has recorded remarkable financial growth in recent years:
The spokesperson of the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), states that in 2024, Nollywood films generated approximately ₦11.5 billion, up from ₦7.2 billion in 2023—a 60% increase.
By 2025, the industry reached a record ₦15.6 billion, representing a 34.7% increase from 2024.
Early projections by businessdayintelligence. ng also showed that revenues would likely exceed ₦11–₦12 billion yearly, piloted by strong film releases and audience demand.
The good news continues in 2026. In the first three months (Q1), ticket sales reached 752,000 – the highest in six years. Box office money for this period hit ₦4.6 billion, up 31% from last year. Recording 661,801 viewers, a 10.9% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
More people are going to watch movies in theaters. Nollywood films now take over 53% of all tickets sold. For the first time, local movies are beating Hollywood at the Nigerian box office.
Why is this happening? Nigerians now love stories that feel close to home. Better movie quality, good marketing, and more cinemas are also helping.
Nollywood is becoming stronger and bringing more people to the big screen. The future looks bright for Nigerian movies!
A key driver of this growth is the increasing popularity of local films:
Nollywood accounted for over 50% of total ticket sales in 2025, surpassing foreign films for the first time in recent years. The industry also held nearly 49.4% market share across West African cinemas. Major films now generate hundreds of millions to billions of naira.
Audience engagement in cinemas has also improved significantly:
About 2.79 million people attended cinemas in 2025, showing steady growth in admissions. The figure, compiled by FilmOne Entertainment, shows a total of 2.79 million people who went to see movies in cinemas in 2025, with 248 new films shown across 122 cinemas in West Africa.
- Several factors contribute to the expansion of Nigeria’s cinema industry:
- Better production standards and aggressive promotion have increased audience interest.
- More cinemas across urban centers have improved accessibility.
Big-budget films and holiday releases attract a massive turnout. These abovementioned factors are also instrumental to the growth and increase in the view and ticket sales in Nollywood cinema across every reach.
Despite the positive outlook, the industry still faces challenges; some of these are the limited number of cinemas relative to Nigeria’s large population, the rising cost of tickets affecting affordability, and competition from streaming platforms and free online content.
Nigeria’s cinema industry is currently in a strong growth phase, driven by rising ticket sales, increasing audience turnout, and the dominance of Nollywood films. With consistent investment in the sector, it is positioned to become a major contributor to Nigeria's economy and global cultural influence.
