Court Intervenes, Orders MTN & Airtel to Restore Data Loan Services Nationwide
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja and Lagos has ordered the immediate restoration of data and airtime loan services operated by MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria, following weeks of disruption that affected millions of subscribers.
The services, popularly known as “XtraTime” (MTN) and “Borrow Me” (Airtel), were earlier suspended in mid-April 2026, a move linked to new regulatory directives from the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). The suspension triggered widespread concern, particularly among users who depend on the feature for urgent communication and internet access.
However, in a decisive ruling, the court described the suspension as unfair to consumers, emphasizing that such essential services should not be withdrawn without adequate consideration of their impact on the public.
Following the court order, both telecom providers have begun restoring the services nationwide as of April 28, 2026. Subscribers can now once again access credit through familiar USSD codes, including *606# for MTN users and *500# for Airtel customers.
The return of these services is expected to provide immediate relief, especially for students, small business operators, and digital users who rely on quick access to airtime and data to stay connected.
Industry observers note that this development highlights the growing tension between regulatory policies and consumer dependence on telecom services. While regulatory bodies aim to protect users and enforce fair practices, the practical realities of digital life in Nigeria continue to demand flexible and accessible solutions.
For many Nigerians, the reinstatement is more than just a service return—it represents restored access to opportunities, communication, and participation in an increasingly digital society.
