Campus Scorches as Heatwave Disrupts Student Life at University of Maiduguri
The ongoing heatwave at University of Maiduguri is not just affecting academics, it’s reshaping campus lifestyle and student experiences in unexpected ways.
From lecture halls to hostel walkways, students are navigating what many now describe as a daily survival routine. Under the blazing afternoon sun, simple activities like attending classes, socializing, or even grabbing a quick meal have become physically draining.
But beyond the struggle, the heat has quietly become a trending topic across campus conversations turning into a shared experience that students bond over. From jokes about “sunburn lectures” to viral WhatsApp status updates complaining about the weather, the heatwave is now part of the campus culture.
Students now prefer evening hangouts over daytime activities, Shaded spots and cafeterias have become social hotspots, Fashion choices are adapting—lighter outfits, sunglasses, and water bottles are now essentials.
Even campus entertainment is being affected. Outdoor events, rehearsals, and sports activities are either delayed or relocated due to the intense conditions.
While students try to adapt, health experts warn that the situation goes beyond inconvenience.
The extreme heat increases the risk of dehydration, which can lead to:
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Poor concentration
In severe cases, it may result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke—conditions that can seriously affect students’ well-being and academic performance.
To cope with the heat, students are advised to:
- Drink water regularly (at least 2 litres daily)
- Avoid excessive sugary or caffeinated drinks
- Take breaks in shaded areas
- Reduce movement during peak afternoon hours
- Hydration is no longer optional—it’s essential.
Stay cool, stay safe
