Ayra Starr & Wizkid Dominate MOBO Awards in Historic Afrobeats Triumph

Nigerian music stars Ayra Starr and Wizkid won major international honors at the MOBO Awards, which took place in the United Kingdom in March 2026.

The MOBO Awards ceremony is known for bringing together artists from across the globe.

The MOBO Awards (Music of Black Origin) is an annual British award ceremony established in 1996 to celebrate excellence in Black music and culture, spanning genres like hip hop, grime, R&B, soul, reggae, and jazz. As Europe’s leading platform for these genres, the MOBOs honor artists, filmmakers, and creators, highlighting their profound impact on the UK music industry.

At the ceremony, Ayra Starr secured the Best International Act award, marking another symbolic factor in her fast-rising career, while Wizkid won Best African Music Act, reaffirming his standing influence in the Afrobeats music. Moreover, their victories reflect not only on their success but also the broader rise of Afrobeats.

After winning Best International Act for the second consecutive year, Ayra Starr was visibly emotional. She told the crowd, "Make some noise! I am actually shaking right now."  I am actually nervous.” She went on to express heartfelt gratitude to her team, the "MOB-STARS," her family, Mavin Records, and her brothers, highlighting the support behind her rapid rise to global recognition, which she described as "growing sonically."

The awards, which recognize excellence in Black music and culture worldwide, highlighted the continued dominance of Nigerian artists at the international level. The recognition of Nigerian artists at such a prestigious event underscores the global acceptance of Afrobeats as a dominant musical force. 

Reacting to the recent wins by Wizkid and Ayra Starr at the MOBO Awards, Ayomide Semilore from the Faculty of Law (UNIMAID) described the achievement as a collective national success rather than an individual one.

“First of all, I will say it’s a major achievement—not just for the artists alone, but for Nigeria as a whole. They’ve placed the country on the global stage, exporting our culture and African sound to the world. It has made Nigeria not only relevant in Africa but globally.”

Similarly, Joy Samuel (Maiduguri) praised the artists’ consistency and dedication, noting that the recognition reflects years of hard work.

“Wizkid truly deserves it—he has been consistent over the years. And Ayra Starr is another artist we cannot deny; she has been putting it in now. Even though she didn’t win at the Grammys, this shows her efforts of being recognized internationally.”

A student of the University of Maiduguri, Faculty of Social Sciences, Rejoice Chikezie, noted that younger artists are increasingly shaping the direction of the industry and connecting more with today’s audience.

“Ayra Starr represents a new generation. She has a youthful vibe, a unique style, and a strong connection with young people. That’s something many fans relate to now, and it’s part of why she’s gaining so much global recognition.”

Afrobeats is now publicly reaching African audiences; it now influences global collaborations and popular culture. This growing visibility contributes to Nigeria’s dominance on the international stage.

The global success of Afrobeats can be attributed to several factors, including:
